The programme is free access to students with Italian or European citizenship and equivalents: in order to be admitted, admission requirements must be verified by a Committee according to the procedures described on this page and set out in the Programme’s regulations.
We recommend that you apply in the first session, without waiting for your first-level degree graduation.
Qualification and curricular requirements
A bachelor's degree or equivalent university qualification of at least three years' duration, also obtained abroad if recognised as suitable.
According to the italian higher education system the educational path must include at least 60 ECTS (university credits) in the MATH SSD groups (scientific disciplinary fields) and provide:
- a sound knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of linear algebra and some of its applications;
- a solid knowledge, both theoretical and practical, of the basic tools of mathematical analysis (limits, functions, continuity, derivatives, integrals) and some of its applications;
- a thorough theoretical and practical introduction to the scientific method and logical-deductive reasoning.
Personal background: exam and interview
Your personal background will be verified through a written examination and, if necessary, an interview (including online).
You are exempt from the written exam if you have, or plan to earn, a bachelor's degree in the L-35 class prior to enrollment, and a weighted average more than 24/30 at the time of application (in the calculation, a grade of “30 cum laude” is equivalent to 31).
The interview is always mandatory for all candidates choosing the Cryptography curriculum, and it may also be requested by candidates who have been exempted from the exam or who have received a positive evaluation.
Language skills
Knowledge of English at least at level B2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is required. You can prove it in one of the following ways
- by having passed a university exam in English B2 as part of your degree programme;
- by providing a language certificate recognised by UniTrento.
If you don’t have any of these certifications, you can take and pass an English test at the University Language Centre before enrolment.

You may apply for admission and take the exam and interview, if any:
- only once a year, unless otherwise explicitly directed by the Admissions Committee
- even before you earn your first level degree, as long as you obtain it, along with all requirements, by the matriculation deadline.
In the application you must indicate the curriculum for which you are seeking admission.
If you want to apply for admission to more than one curriculum, you must complete one application for each curriculum.
We recommend that you apply as early as the first session, without waiting until you have obtained your first degree.
The outcome of the evaluation is communicated by email.
The adequacy of personal background is verified
- with a written examination on fundamentals of Analysis, Linear Algebra and, depending on the chosen Curriculum, other subjects. Candidates and applicants as indicated in Admission Requirements - Personal background are exempted from the examination
- with a possible interview, including online, provided in such cases:
- always for those who choose the Cryptography Curriculum;
- in cases requested by the Commission, but only after passing the written examination;
- if requested by the Commission, also as an orientation, for those who are exempted from the written exam or evaluated positively.
The attached Syllabuses describe the contents of the test for the common part and for the specific curricula.
We provide questions from previous years' exams as examples.

Verification by the committee may have one of the following output:
- unconditional admission to one or more curricula
- admission to a specific curriculum, with an individual study plan involving teachings agreed upon with the Commission, based on your initial preparation and specific interests
- non-admission.
In case you are not admitted because you don't meet specific curricular requirements, the Commission will indicate a learning path to acquire them.
The Commission may give you the opportunity to apply for verification of requirements a second time for the same academic year.
If admitted, you will receive an email from Student Support with directions on how to proceed with enrolment.
If you don't meet the language proficiency requirement, you can make it up by passing an English language test at the Centro Linguistico di Ateneo (CLA).
The written tests will be held in person in Trento at the CLA, while the speaking part will be online.
Once you have achieved the language requirement, write an email to the Student support service in order to proceed with the enrolment.
