With your Master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology, you will be able to develop scientific methodologies and coordinate study and research projects on a national and international level.  Upon completion of your Master's degree, you will be familiar with

  • the genetic aspects of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells and cell culture techniques;
  • the structure, functions and analysis of biological macromolecules and the cellular processes in which they are involved;
  • the morphology and functions of human and animal organisms;
  • the basics of pathological processes of human and animal interest, with reference to their cellular and molecular pathogenetic mechanisms and the congenital or acquired pathological conditions in which it is possible to intervene with a biotechnological approach;
  • the bioinformatics and statistical methods for organising, building and accessing databases, with particular reference to genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics and metagenomics;
  • know how to use the main methods characterising molecular and cellular biotechnologies (including gene and cell therapy) for the design of biopharmaceuticals, diagnostics and vaccines;
  • analysis  interactions between viruses and bacteria and human organisms;
  • how to acquire appropriate knowledge of the cultural context, with particular reference to bioethics, national and European Union regulations on the protection of inventions and safety in the biotechnology sector, the valorisation of intellectual property, economics and business management, sociology and communication,
  • how to carry out basic and applied research, promotion, development, technology transfer, training and communication of scientific and technological innovation in areas related to health biotechnology disciplines, with a global vision of health, well-being and sustainability;
  • mastering the scientific method of investigation, which will enable you to embark on a future academic career or professional context in the biomedical and biotechnological field.

Studying Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology means that you will have to put into practice what you have learnt in the classroom. You will be required to

  • complete laboratory sessions
  • take part in flipped classrooms, where you will be required to critically analyse scientific articles, present them in class and design experiments.
  • Attend weekly seminars run by the department
  • An internship, which you can do in-house, to find out how research works.

Career Opportunities

After completing your Master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology, you will be able to work in the following areas

  • Research and technological development activities in public structures (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, CNR, IIT, etc.); in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, food and cosmetics industries.
  • Technical and scientific information and communication activities;
  • Regulatory, management and business start-up activities in the public and private sectors;
  • Managerial, executive and advisory activities in the pharmacological, bio-health, diagnostic, cosmetic and dietetic-food sectors.

Cellular and molecular biotechnology occupations

  • Biologists
  • Biochemists
  • Biotechnologists (food, industrial, medical)
  • Pharmacologists
  • Microbiologists

New professions in the field of cellular and molecular biotechnology are constantly emerging due to the very rapid progress of this field, which has a high demand for graduates.

Further Studies

With a Master's degree in Cellular and Molecular Biotechnology, you will have access to PhD courses in biological and biotechnological disciplines, both in Italy and in Europe and the United States, as well as PhD courses in other sciences where biotechnology plays an important role.

At UniTrento you will find
