Studying Materials Engineering at the University of Trento means being in an environment where you are at the centre of teaching: thanks to the presence of laboratories, you will learn by putting knowledge into practice, thus seeing the concrete result of theory (learning by doing). You will also develop your problem-solving skills by working on individual or group projects. You will also learn how to integrate different subjects through the interdisciplinary approach aimed at the application of sustainability criteria and the implementation of circular economy principles. From a professional point of view, this course will also allow you to grow: you will meet experts from companies and the world of work.
Finally, you will have many opportunities to go abroad by choosing one of the international mobility and double degree programmes.
The Master's degree in Materials Engineering will provide you with
- A solid foundation in engineering and materials knowledge, particularly in production processes, materials properties, materials development and applications
- A focus on the conception, design and development of innovative products, particularly with regard to sustainability and the circular economy
- A mastery of modern technologies for the production and characterisation of traditional and innovative materials
- Excellent knowledge of technologies for the chemical, rubber and plastics industries, mechanical and metallurgical technologies, textile and optoelectronic technologies
- Knowledge of product and process simulation methods.
- Language and communication skills, as the course is taught in English and you will learn to read and write technical documents in this language.
In addition, depending on the curriculum you choose, you will develop specific knowledge in the following areas
- Materials and processes for energy generation, storage and transmission
- Materials and technologies for manufacturing
- Materials and processes for the automotive and transport industries
- Nanomaterials and nanotechnology
- Surface engineering
Thanks to the interdisciplinary approach, you will develop interdisciplinary and transversal skills such as
- managing the entire life cycle of an industrial product
- the design, production and management of the manufacturing process
- Strategies for recycling, reusing or disposing of materials
In addition to classroom learning, you will also have the opportunity to complement your studies with
- Laboratory experience
- Project activities
- Study visits to experience elements of corporate culture
- Seminars
- Work placements.
Career Opportunities
With a Master's degree in Materials Engineering, you will be responsible for
- Supervising and coordinating an engineering and production team
- Planning and coordinating research and development, design, production and technical support
- Interacting with technical operators such as mechanical designers, process technologists, planning, production and logistics engineers.
You will be able to work
- in manufacturing and process industries
- Public and private research centres
- in design, consultancy and service companies
- Public administration, with a focus on the environment and safety
Other career opportunities and further training:
- After graduation, examination and registration with the Order, you can work as a freelancer (subject to examination and registration with the Order)
- Management consultancy
Other examples of professional roles
- Designing and developing new products and materials
- Production organisation and management
- Development of materials and processes for sustainable energy conversion and management
- Quality control
Further Studies
With your Master's degree in Materials Engineering, you will have access to a PhD in Materials Engineering and Science.
