Materials Engineering

I chose Materials Engineering driven by the desire to find a scientific path with a concrete impact on the real world. During my studies, I deeply appreciated the balance between theoretical rigor and industrial applications, an aspect that allowed me to develop a broad, holistic perspective. Today, in my role as Product Manager at Aquafil, that solid technical foundation is my primary tool for engaging with clients and partners. Beyond specific competencies, the program instilled in me resilience and problem-solving skills, essential qualities for leading innovative and sustainable projects.

What I appreciated most about Materials Engineering was the freedom to do research on what I was truly passionate about. The academic offer is broad, the labs are numerous and well-equipped, and the professors are always willing to guide you along the way. Once I figured out my interests, I was able to build a thesis tailored to me, exploring a topic I could genuinely call my own. An experience that not only shaped me technically and scientifically, but above all taught me to think like a researcher.

I chose Materials Engineering because I have always been fascinated by the possibility of deepening my understanding of what surrounds me: everything around us is made of materials. Throughout the program I gained theoretical foundations that underpin the creation, modelling, and behavior of materials. I particularly appreciated the practical dimension of the degree and the opportunity to see in the laboratory what I had studied in theory take shape. Today, in my role as Head of Testing & Analysis, I put into practice the technical skills I acquired, above all the ability to work as part of a team that I developed during laboratory sessions.

My choice to study Materials Engineering stems from my curiosity about how the world works and from the desire to understand how materials, their production processes, and their applications contribute to technological progress. During my university studies I acquired solid theoretical foundations, reinforced by laboratory activities and by engagement with highly qualified faculty, all of which provided me with concrete, transferable skills. Today, in my role as a composites materials expert, I have the opportunity to contribute to the production, research, and development of new launch systems for the aerospace sector, applying on a daily basis the competencies I gained and taking part in the advancement of cutting-edge technologies.

What I appreciated most about the Materials Engineering master's degree is the balance between solid theoretical foundations and hands-on learning. I loved the collaborative environment, relatively small classes and direct relationships with lecturers. The programme gave me a broad view of the world of materials and the chance to move between research, laboratories, and industry, also thanks to its international dimension. Today, at the company where I work, I recognise what I learned: method, critical thinking, and a genuine desire to understand 'how things really work'. To future engineers I say: nurture your curiosity: it will be your superpower.

What I appreciated most about Materials Engineering, beyond the study programme packed with hands-on lab activities, are the sports, music, and social opportunities available to us students. More often than not, athletes and musicians who move away from home end up dropping these activities, both for financial and logistical reasons.
