To access and attend the course it is necessary to have certain levels of linguistic skills, based on the path chosen, in Italian or English.
Curriculum in Italian
If you choose the Curriculum in Italian, you must have the following language skills:
- English proficiency at level A2, which you need to acquire or certify for admission to the course ora at the latest before taking exams belonging to the 2nd and 3rd year.
- English proficiency at level B1, which you need to acquire or certify before taking exams in the 3rd year.
Students who enrolled in the course up to the academic year 2023/2024 must have English proficiency at level B1, to be acquired or certified before taking exams in the 3rd year.
Curriculum in English
If you choose the Curriculum in English, you must have the following language skills:
- English proficiency at level B2, which you need to acquire or certify during the admission process or at the latest before taking exams belonging to the 2nd and 3rd year.
- If you are a native Italian speaker, you must have English proficiency at level C1, or Technical English, which you need to acquire or certify before taking exams belonging to the 3rd year.
- If you are not a native Italian speaker, you must pass a basic Italian language proficiency test before taking belonging to the 3rd year.
How to acquire or certify language proficiency
Admission language requirements
You can demonstrate that you have the language skills required for admission in one of the following ways:
- take and pass an English language test at the University Language Centre (CLA) before the start of the second year and, in any case, before taking the second-year exams.
- Submit a language certificate of a level equal to or higher than the level required for your programme after enrolment.
- If you enrol in the Italian curriculum, you can also take the English language proficiency test in the admission test (TOLC). You must obtain a score equal to or higher than the required level.
Compulsory language proficiency
You must take the language test at the level required for your programme before graduation.
The procedures for taking and registering for the test are described on the CLA Language Tests page. The procedures are agreed with the Department and supervised by a lecturer appointed by the Director.
At the University Language Centre (CLA), you can attend language courses free of charge to acquire the language skills needed to pass the language tests.
Recognition of a language certificate
If you already have an international language certificate, you can request recognition of your language requirements for both admission requirements and the compulsory language test:
- check whether your certificate is among those recognised by the University.
- Submit your certificate by completing the online application Language certificates - Departments of Physics, Information Engineering and Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics, CIBIO 2025/2026 from 10 September 2025 to 9 September 2026.
Credits recognised thanks to certifications obtained before enrolment are not taken into account in the calculation for maintaining the right to a scholarship awarded by the Opera Universitaria di Trento.
