The large number of companies in the energy sector has led to the creation of the Master of Science in Energy Engineering, an inter-university course between the Universities of Trento and Bolzano. In this course you will learn how to develop and propose effective and innovative technological solutions to problems related to the progressive depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels and the environmental impact of energy use.

You will study energy efficiency in both buildings and industrial production, the generation of renewable energy using small- to medium-scale technologies, and the environmental impacts linked to energy production. The program
also covers technological innovation and the management dynamics of the energy market. During the first year, you will acquire the basic knowledge which you can then deepen in the second year by choosing your area of specialisation. The two tracks are

Technologies for Energy Efficiency, where you will focus on energy efficiency issues

Renewable and Innovative Technologies for Energy Supply, where you will focus on energy production from renewable sources.

The MSc in Energy Engineering will make you a professional capable of tackling complex and advanced problems in energy engineering or those requiring an interdisciplinary approach.

The course is taught entirely in English

Testimonials

After completing my Bachelor's degree at the Free University of Bolzano, I chose to continue my Master’s studies here for the same reasons that initially drew me to Bolzano: its unique location, small class sizes, and vibrant international environment. The university’s strong collaboration with Eurac Research provided me with the opportunity to spend eight months with the Energy Efficient Buildings research group, where I conducted my thesis on an innovative smart glazing technology, combining experimental studies with simulations. I now work at Arup in London, an international engineering consultancy, helping global clients with a diverse range of projects. My work focuses on building physics, including dynamic thermal modelling, daylight and radiation modelling, computational fluid dynamics, and microclimate studies.

Primo piano studente laureato

After earning my Bachelor's degree in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering from the Free University of Bolzano, I immediately decided to continue my studies in the Energy Engineering Master’s program. The program’s focus aligned perfectly with my interests, covering topics such as energy efficiency in buildings, systems, products, and processes, as well as clean and green energy technologies for sustainable energy supply. My thesis, which involved a fluid-thermodynamics analysis of a product patented by Enolgas, was recognized as the best Italian thesis in the energy field by AiCARR and was subsequently published in the AiCARR Journal. Professionally, I began my career in the building automation sector at Ekon GmbH as a project developer for digital buildings, focusing on energy savings and occupant comfort. I later transitioned to the HVAC field at Clivet S.p.A., joining the Research and Development department. Currently, I hold the position of Energy Solution Specialist at EPTA Group, a leading international company in the commercial refrigeration sector, where I focus on analyzing the energy consumption of retail stores and developing high-efficiency system solutions.

I am actively engaged in designing plastic components for the automotive industry, including fuel tanks, oil reservoirs, electrical circuits, and containment frames for battery cells. My role involves supporting the design process by conducting various validation tests and optimization assessments through Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. I work with a range of physical phenomena, including fluid dynamics, thermal management, electrical systems, and, more recently, electromagnetic and optical simulations. The Master’s program significantly enriched my academic journey and equipped me with critical knowledge and skills that have been instrumental to my professional development.

I have always been passionate about building efficiency and sustainable design, which led me to pursue the Master’s in Energy Engineering. This program stood out for its multidisciplinary and international approach, with courses conducted in English that prepared me to work in a global environment, including abroad. During my studies, I gained practical experience through projects that integrated theory with real-world applications, enabling me to develop skills directly connected to my current role. The professors and research assistants were highly dedicated, promoting a dynamic and supportive learning environment that encouraged innovation and critical thinking. Today, as a Building Physics Specialist at Atmos Lab (London, UK), I use the expertise acquired during my Master's to optimize building performance and conduct simulations for energy efficiency and comfort.
